Artwork: (Pavement)  London Streets

The pavement is more than just a means to get from one point to another; it's a pathway designed for pedestrians to navigate the streets of London. It's a designated area of space that is naturally understood to be safe and secure. But once you step onto the street and cross the light, the danger becomes real, and you're in a space that is socially understood as being unsafe. The fear of being hit by a car or bus can be overwhelming.

When photographing the pavement, it's interesting to note how the natural uniformity of the shape, when stitched together in a digital format, creates a unique pavement pattern. The photographs capture the reality of the space - the textures of damage, trash, human activity, cigarettes, paper, and whatever else found its way to the pavement. It's a visual representation of the human presence in a public space, and the imprint we leave behind.

The London pavement is a place where the lives of many intersect, a space that connects people, communities, and cultures. It's where we walk, run, jog, sit, stand, and sometimes even sleep. It's a place that tells a story about the city and its people, and it's an integral part of the urban landscape.

The PARALLEL Festival, an international collaboration between postgraduate students at Chelsea College of Arts and Hong Kong Baptist University, took place from January 23 - February 24, 2023, and was a huge success.

The festival was a series of workshops, performances, talks, publications, and works that were organised collaboratively by the MA Fine Art cohort at UAL Chelsea and MA students at Hong Kong Baptist University. Participants were able to join in-person events in London and Hong Kong, as well as virtual events from anywhere in the world.

The festival explored the themes of community and collaboration in an international context, bringing together peers from across the globe. From peeling mandarin oranges to creating zines, there were plenty of opportunities for participants to engage with the festival and contribute to its success.
